The Four Great Beasts
The four legendary beasts of ancient China were the Green Dragon, the White Tiger, the Vermillion Bird and the Xuanwu. The Green Dragon in the east was wood, the White Tiger in the west was gold, the Vermillion Bird in the south was fire, and the Xuanwu in the north was water.
The four beasts are also a way of referring to the Chinese twelve hours of the year corresponding to the auspiciousness of different hours.
This is why it is in the shadow of the hall to know the order of the sun and moon, and see the ice in the bottle to know the cold and heat of the world.
